Transport et logistique : quelles chaussures de sécurité et autre équipement porter pour se protéger ?

Transport and logistics: what safety shoes and other equipment to wear to protect yourself?

You are interested in the transport and logistics sector, and you wonder if the job of delivery driver, handler or forklift operator involves risks. The answer is yes. On a daily basis, you can bump, cut, twist your ankle or even receive a heavy object on your foot. To avoid all these dangers, it is ideal to wear PPE adapted to the job.

Everything you need to know about the transport and logistics sector

A sector that is indispensable in everyday life

Nowadays, almost all companies use transport companies either to bring raw materials to them or to ship their goods to customers or points of sale. The logistics platforms are full of forklift truck drivers and handlers who are responsible for stocking up or preparing orders at a high rate. In addition, transportation is part of our daily lives, whether we take the subway to work, or the train or plane to travel.

A rapidly developing sector

The globalization of trade, the recovery of tourism after the health crisis and the boom in e-commerce have enabled the transport and logistics sector to develop considerably. And whether by road, air, sea or rail, companies in the sector are constantly looking for new professionals, whatever their level.

High-risk jobs requiring special equipment

Working in transport and logistics involves risks such as crushing, slipping, punctures or even muscle fatigue. Indeed, many accidents occur during the transport and handling of goods, which is why it is important to wear high performance PPE, from head to toe, which allows you to be protected and to be seen.

The helmet

Regardless of its shape or color, whether it has a visor or not, a protective helmet is essential when working in an environment where falling objects are frequent and can be fatal.

Gloves

This is the equipment to wear at all costs, especially in logistics. Indeed, handling objects, sometimes sharp or perforating, is part of everyday life. Even a cut with a cardboard box can do great damage to the fingers.

The high visibility jacket or parka

Whether you work at night or not, indoors or outdoors, a high visibility jacket allows you to be easily spotted and thus avoid being hit.

Safety shoes

The feet of material handlers, warehousemen or deliverymen are in danger as soon as an object falls on them or when they take a blow. To avoid breaking a toe, it is essential to wear adequate safety shoes.

The essential characteristics of safety shoes

Protective

The primary role of safety shoes is to protect the lower body, especially the feet and ankles. Only shoes with a protective toecap designed to withstand 200 joules of energy are truly effective. This also protects you when you are around dangerous equipment such as pallet trucks and forklifts.

Anti-slip

It is not uncommon to slip because of a puddle on a particular surface or even a dropped delivery plug, especially when the upper body is monopolized. The anti-slip feature of safety shoes limits slips and falls.

Lightweight and comfortable

An order picker or delivery person travels many miles each day, even if he or she stays within a small area. The resulting muscle fatigue can be reduced with light, comfortable shoes. A cushioned insole is the little extra to add for perfect comfort.

Flexible

Nothing is more unpleasant than a safety shoe in which the foot is locked in. The more flexible the shoe, the more you can walk, load, unload, or climb without constraint, in short, be free to move.

Before choosing your PPE for work in the transport and logistics sector, you must therefore list and evaluate each risk involved. This is the only way to protect the body completely and not to suffer by wearing unsuitable equipment. And this is the case for every sector of activity. Construction, public works and the restaurant industry are no exception to this rule. Here is a guide to choosing the right safety shoes for the construction industry.
